Rokaya Abdelaal, President
General Assembly Third Committee
For years, HIAMUN has been a space where meaningful discussions reverberate far beyond the walls of the committee rooms. Similarly to the act of resonance, By amplifying voices across individuals and turning all ideas into collective action, each delegate’s contribution creates ripples of impact that extend far beyond the committee room. This is why this year’s theme, Resonance, is a clear representation of what each year’s conference aims to accomplish. It captures the effective impact of shared thoughts and amplified voices. Just as sound travels in waves and echoes across vast distances, so do the collective actions that occur at HIAMUN, echoing the values of justice and equity. HIAMUN ’26 is a platform where your voices resonate globally.
Layla Abdelaziz, Chair
The Third Committee of the General Assembly, also known as the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), is one of the six main committees of the United Nations General Assembly, serving as the primary forum for Member States to discuss a number of issues that deal with global human rights, social development, and humanitarian issues.
I, Rokaya Abdelaal, alongside my most esteemed Chair, Layla Abdelaziz, have selected three thought-provoking topics designed to spark meaningful and engaging debate amongst delegates, and allow them to contribute to different solutions that protect the livelihood of individuals worldwide. Our first topic, “Reviewing the ICESCR to Redefine the Unified Framework for Standardizing Social Welfare Obligations”, challenges delegates to assess how countries implement social welfare rights (like healthcare, housing, and education) under the the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), and explores creating a clearer, more enforceable global standard to ensure equality and accountability. This topic is extremely relevant today as disparities in these rights continue to grow, especially in times of human crisis and economic instability.
As for our second topic, “Ensuring the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers and Their Families” we found it essential to be focusing on safeguarding migrant workers and their families from exploitation, discrimination, and unsafe living or working conditions. Layla and I chose this topic as millions of migrants worldwide lack legal protections and access to basic rights, making them highly vulnerable to sensitive situations.
Lastly, Layla and I chose our third topic to be, “Establishing international regulations to safeguard individual digital rights and privacy”. This topic brings GA3 into the digital age and allows delegates to confront the global implications of surveillance and data misuse.
Layla and I are honoured to chair this reputable committee and are overjoyed to welcome you all to HIAMUN ’26, where we are confident that each one of you will embark a unique journey, collaborating with fellow delegates to working hand in hand toward the shared principles of peace, diplomacy, and multilateral cooperation that lie at the heart of the United Nations. It is an honour to chair this forum, and Layla and I are looking forward to seeing what you are able to accomplish.
