General Assembly Sixth Committee

Sophia Sabry, President

Taha Beshir, Chair

Throughout the years, the whole has always been greater than the sum. The variance in cultures and opinions between parties is what paves the way for innovation and evolution; bringing communities closer together. When ideas discussed during debate resonate with each other , whether it's on the podium or during lobbying and merging, they become integral in the synthesis of solutions to global conflicts, creating unforgettable memories. The year’s theme is one that is not only timely, but encapsulates the spirit of HIAMUN; being resonance. Delegates of diverse experiences are annually given the chance to work together to ignite debates that challenge and reverberate with many.

The United Nation General Assembly Sixth Committee is the sole body in the United Nations dedicated to all things legal. It’s the primary place where representatives coordinate efforts to settle controversial legalities, such as universal jurisdiction and cyber laws. The focus on the management and utilization of legal loopholes is what creates a challenging atmosphere that pushes delegates past their limits.

I ,Sophia Sabry, alongside my most esteemed chair Taha Beshir have curated 3 topics that we believe will bring heated debates and push delegates to think outside of the box.

Our first topic, “Establishing International Legal Frameworks for the Regulation of Human Enhancement Technologies” endeavours to generate guidelines that safeguard against the weaponization of humans, and explore the  legal aspects and implications of biotechnology. This topic takes a holistic approach towards emerging legal ambiguities, such as Dual-Use technologies and the differentiation between State and Non-State Actors, sure to challenge delegates and ignite spirited debate.

Our second topic, “Questioning the Application of Responsibility to Protect”, is a holistic one that revisits the shortcomings of the Responsibility to Protect doctrine in compelling cases like Libya's in 2011, aiming to improve upon the proposed regulations. What’s more, this topic demands to develop strategies in which States can increase global cooperation , therefore increasing international cooperation and multinational trust, while also protecting weakened States’ political and economic standings.

Our last and most pressing topic is “Establishing Legal frameworks to Regulate the Weaponization and Trade of Natural Resources”, which resonates with many countries around the world, including Egypt and Canada. Among the many concepts tackled, are legal tensions surrounding geological privilege, state sovereignty regarding distribution of natural resources, and the lack of transparency in resource supply chains which provokes delegates to work around these grey areas, and incorporate innovation in their solutions.

Taha and I are elated to be chairing such a captivating forum, and provide our delegates with all the opportunity and resources they need to reach their maximum potential. I hope you’re excited, because we definitely are.
